Greater Nepal Nationalist Front Sends Open Letter to Indian PM Modi on Independence Day
Kathmandu . On the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, the Greater Nepal Nationalist Front (GNNF) has sent an open letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi, demanding the return of Nepali territories said to be under Indian control since the Sugauli Treaty.
In its letter, GNNF extended greetings to the Indian people but excluded residents living in Nepali lands under Indian occupation. The organization accused India of maintaining a “double standard on independence” since 15 August 1947, arguing that while India and Pakistan became free under the Indian Independence Act of 18 July 1947, Nepali territories annexed by the British colony should also have been restored to Nepal’s sovereignty.
The letter criticized India for hoisting its national flag on lands claimed as Nepali soil, calling it “a direct insult to independence and human rights.” It further asserted that India’s control over areas stretching from Kamrup-Kamakhya and the Brahmaputra east of the Mechi River, from the Ravi River west of the Kali River, and the vast plains north of the Ganges is “illegal and coercive,” since neither country ratified the Sugauli Treaty post-1947.
Citing its research, the Front claimed that Greater Nepal’s historical territory covers 334,250 sq. km, with 187,097 sq. km remaining under Indian control for nearly eight decades. Chairperson Phanindra Nepal reiterated that the GNNF has been peacefully campaigning for the land’s return for two decades and called on India to cooperate with Nepal in resolving the issue.
The letter has also been copied to the Prime Ministers of Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Open Letter from Greater Nepal Nationalist Front to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi on the Occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day
Shri Narendra Damodardas Modi
Prime Minister, India
1. First of all, on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, the Greater Nepal Nationalist Front extends heartfelt greetings to the Indian people—excluding those living in Nepali territories under Indian control since the Sugauli Treaty.
2. Independence is a universally recognized fundamental principle; however, India has maintained a double standard on independence since 15 August 1947, which is wholly unacceptable.
3. The independence of Pakistan and India did not come by defeating Britain in war, but under the Indian Independence Act of 18 July 1947. According to that Act, Nepali territories annexed by the British colony also became independent on the same day. One must not forget this fact. How is it just that Pakistan and India became independent, yet Nepali lands remained trapped under Indian colonial control?
4. Celebrating Independence Day is the Indian government’s right, but hoisting the Indian flag on Nepali soil is a direct insult to independence and human rights.
5. Since neither Nepal nor India has ratified the Sugauli Treaty to be applicable to India since 15 August 1947, India’s continued control over territories from Kamrup-Kamakhya and the Brahmaputra beyond the Mechi River, from the Ravi River beyond the Kali River, and the vast plains north of the Ganges River is illegal and coercive.
6. According to studies by the Greater Nepal Nationalist Front, the total area of Greater Nepal is 334,250 sq. km, of which 187,097 sq. km of Nepali land has remained under Indian colonial control for nearly eight decades.
7. The Greater Nepal Nationalist Front, which has been peacefully conducting a national and international campaign for the return of Greater Nepal’s land for the past two decades, strongly urges the Government of India to work together with the Government of Nepal to initiate the process of returning these territories.
